Summer is not only a great time to read, it’s also a great time to write!
If you’ve always wanted to write a novel, short story or memoir, join Algonquin Area Public Library, and the Algonquin Area Writers Group this July for a series of mini writing workshops designed to spark your creativity!
Each workshop will cover an essential element of storytelling, and help put you on the path to writing the book of your dreams. All will be held virtually, on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 pm. Registration is required, and open to adults and teens, 14 and over. Click on the dates to sign up.
July 6 What It’s About, Why It Matters– we’ll cover the basics of genre, literary forms, premise and theme.
July 13 Compelling Characters – learn to create unforgettable main and supporting characters for your story.
July 20 Plot and Structure – discover how to use story structure and turning points to create a riveting plot.
July 27 Time and Place – immerse readers in a vibrant story world, using sensory details to bring your characters and setting to life
Presentations will run approximately 30-45 minutes, including questions and discussion time. After the presentation, participants will have an opportunity to work independently on their projects, using story planning materials created by National Novel Writing Month, for their twice-yearly CampNaNoWriMo.
Camp NaNoWriMo runs July 1 – 31, and is a fun, relaxed writing event that allows new and experienced writers to work on any writing project they like, including the essential steps that go into planning a new short story, novel or memoir. Learn more about National Novel Writing Month here.
